Kontrol S4 and S2 Driver Update Kills Jog Wheel Midi Output
Nov 28, 2013
I have found out that the latest Driver Update has killed the S4 and S2 Jog Midi Output.  I am not exactly sure what killed it but I am working on a solution, but I speculate that the Mk2 versions have something to do with it.  Please be patient as I work through this.

NI or Automix update breaks my Kontrol S4 and Kontrol S2 maps for VDJ
Nov 14, 2013
It seems that National Instruments or Atomix updated something that has broken some of the functions of my S4 and S2 maps.  I have not updated my rig yet, but I am currently working on finding and correcting the issue.  If you are one of these users, please do me a favor and send me an email or message with your OS, Controller Editor version, and VDJ version.  This will help me flesh out the changes that may have caused this.  Thanks everyone!!

I am loving the new colors, but I am think I am going to wait to see how the new Maschine MKII integrates into the new Traktor 2.5 workflow before buying this one.  The colors are awfully reminiscent of the Kontrol F1.  In my perfect world, NI will include NHL protocol to this bad boy to control the Traktor remix decks.  I cannot wait to see this develop!!

New Kontrol S4 OSX Definition and Mapper v2 announced!!
Jan 06, 2012
Since the current definition works well in Windows, I will not be changing that version at all.  I will be updating the mapper so keep and eye out for that.  When I release the 2nd version of the mapper, I will also be releasing a new OSX definition.  This will be a complete port of the Windows version and will function exactly the same, including the LEDs this time.  As always, updates are free for my early adopters.  All you have to do is reply to the email that the files were delivered on and I will take care of the rest.  If you do not have that email any longer, just send me an email from the account that your PayPal account is registered to and I can track you down from there.

Energy Boost Mixing

Oct 30, 2011
Found this info while forum crawling and thought I would share this with those of us who use the camelot scale when mixing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Energy boost mixing" is a great technique to create energy on your dance floor.
How-To
Here is how to use it: Detect the key of your current song, and pick the next song to be 1 or 2 semitones above it.
If you're in C Minor, your next key should be D-flat Minor (+1 semitone) or D Minor (+2 semitones). Take a look at the image above. The rule is always the same, just go "right" on the piano from your original key.
The effect is really interesting: Energy on the dancefloor will rise every time. It doesn't work with every song, but most of the time it can create a pleasant effect.
Does this translate to Camelot numbers?
Yes. To go up one semitone, add 7 to your current Camelot number. If you're in E-flat Minor (2A), add 7 and you'll be in E Minor (9A).
To go up two semitones, just add 2 to your current Camelot number. If you're in C Minor (5A), add 2 and you'll get D Minor (7A). Play your next tune in 7A, and you'll experience an energy boost mix.
Who uses it?
I've heard Sasha and Armin Van Buuren use this technique many times. I personally love mixing +2 semitones since it does not clash as much as mixing +1 semitone. Every DJ should try this mix: The effect is really interesting.
Camelot Scale
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks to Yakov of Mixed in Key.  This technique also holds true when you want to slow the dance floor by moving left on the keyboard or going down 1 or 2 semitones (subtracting 7 or 2 respectively on the camelot scale).

At last, the S2 has arrived...
Oct 16, 2011
I have been approached a lot lately with this question: "Are you going to release a VDJ definition/mapper version for the Kontrol S2?"  The answer is YES!!  I am waiting on a friend to get his S2 in my studio so I can get things working, among other projects that I have going on.  Believe me, everyone will know when these files hit the "digital" street.  If you think I should put the Kontrol S2 at the front of my projects list, drop me a little message on my contact page and if demand is high enough, I will do just that.  But first, one of my inspirations on mapping...Ean Golden...genius. Why Does The DJ Cost So Much
May 20, 2011
This is a post that I found while browsing the forums.  Thanks to DJ City for this post!!  Its a bit of a read but so very true.  If your shopping around for a DJ please keep this in mind.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why Does the DJ Cost So Much!!??
This article is for anyone looking to hire a DJ and for DJs who need to explain their pricing. Often people who look to hire a DJ think that the DJ is “just coming over to play some music” and cannot see why a DJ would charge so much money for the task. Professional DJ’s often find themselves having to defend their expertise against someone who holds the same title of “DJ” but advertises to do the same job for a much lower price. All of these reasons are justified until the proper level of understanding is achieved. Hopefully this article will aid in that understanding. (Read More...)
First of all let’s divide DJs into two groups which most people commonly understand the names of: The Professional DJ and the Novice DJ. The Professional (by definition) is a person who earns a living in an occupation frequently engaged in by amateurs: a professional DJ. The Novice (by definition) is a person who is “new to or inexperienced in a certain task, situation, etc; beginner.”
Two other important distinctions that must be understood are the Nightclub DJ and the Mobile DJ. These two may be Professional or Novice, however the difference is the equipment utilized and the labor and time involved to move that equipment.
Nightclub DJ (Club DJ)
The DJ working in a Club atmosphere may only be required to show up with his table-top equipment, music library, and his DJ skills. The hardware required in this situation is usually minimal and typically consists of the DJs Laptop and optional external hard drive and sound card. Also, if the venue/nightclub does not provide it, the DJ may be required to furnish Turntables or MP3 Controller, and possibly a DJ mixer. The Club DJ can typically fit his equipment into a regular sized vehicle and does not require a substantial amount of loading, transport, set up time or labor. Keep in mind that this DJ can be a Professional or Novice and the availability/type of equipment as well as experience of a Club DJ can still make a drastic difference in the cost of the DJ and success of your event (as you will see below). Along with the equipment, important things to consider when pricing a Club DJ are:
The DJs music – Does the DJ have a broad enough or clean enough music selection
Is the DJ familiar with the equipment provided by the Nightclub
If the event is public, can the DJ help with the marketing of the event (either through his popularity or his marketing machine)
Mobile DJ
The Mobile DJ is in a very different situation from the Club DJ. The Mobile DJ has the responsibility for purchasing or providing every piece of Sound Equipment needed to make amplified music happen at your event. The type, quality, and dependability of the Sound Equipment can vary greatly from the Novice DJ to the Professional DJ and this difference can make or break your event very easily. The mobile DJ dedicates many more hours of work for an event than what the person hiring the DJ usually understands. Here is an example of the time spent by a Mobile DJ that needs to be understood by both the Client and the DJ:
As you can see, what the Client sees as only a three hour gig, can actually be a full 8 hour day for the DJ.
As stated earlier, the type, quality, and dependability of the Sound Equipment can vary greatly from the Novice DJ to the Professional DJ. The Professional DJ is more likely to have invested in quality equipment that has a reputation for being dependable. After all, a Mobile DJ is only as dependable as his equipment. The Professional DJ is also more likely to have extra or backup equipment even in the event that any equipment fails. The Professional DJ will understand how to size the amount of sound reinforcement needed to fit the room that your event is held in. The Pro will also know the best way to set up the equipment to not only be efficient, but to look tasteful and not interfere with the flow of your event. The amount of money invested in a DJ’s equipment can translate directly to the fees that he may charge a Client. Quality costs the DJ; and in turn Quality costs the Client. Here is an average example of a Novice DJs equipment list versus a Professional DJs equipment list:
**Prices derived from Guitar Center prices April 2011**
In addition to the equipment listed here, many Professional DJs also carry liability insurance, lighting and effects; all of which may contribute to the fees that the DJ charges.
Finally, here are some reasons why a DJ may cost you more depending on his Professionalism.
A Professional DJ:
WORKS UNDER CONTRACT! To protect You, the DJ, Your Guest, and Your Event.
Can easily provide a clean music selection if required
Has experience playing to diverse groups of people (tastes, culture, and age)
Understands that the “look” of their equipment effects the look of your event
Has invested considerable time and money in their equipment
Can adjust the music by the moment to fit your event (referred to as “reading the crowd”)
In the end, the practice of DJ service, be it Professional or Novice, still follows the rule of “You get what you pay for”. If a DJ has an incredibly low price, there is probably a reason for it. The Professional Mobile DJ that quotes a price is not quoting for the 3-4 hours of your event; they are quoting for the job at hand. The Club DJ knows his worth in the market and may charge you more or less accordingly for a reason. Contracts are to protect your event and your money. If the DJ does not provide one, create one or proceed with caution understand that you are dealing with a Novice. Not taking all of the things in this article seriously could end up having your kids or Grandma cursed out by offensive music, the sound stopping during your wedding, your guest disappointed because none of their favorite songs got played, or worse, no DJ showing up at all.
Completely Digital Now
Apr 26, 2011
I recently picked up a Native Instruments Kontrol S4 and I must say that it is a beautiful piece of kit.  The default mapping works well with Traktor Scratch Pro 2.  I plan on using the Hybrid Mode of the Denon DN-S3700 and use the Akai APC40 to control effects and sample decks.  Thanks to the new file support with TSP2, I will be using it exclusively unless I am requested to run a video set.
Additionally, I have finished the files needed to get the KS4 running with Virtual DJ Pro.  Check my media page for the specifics.
Virtual DJ Definition and Mapper for the Akai APC40
Feb 7, 2011
I have added my APC40 definition and mappers for Virtual DJ to my Media Page as donation ware.  I am currently working on a better version of the definition where the Akai firmware imposed hardware limitations are bypassed.  In essence, all of the buttons and LED colors will be completely mappable, this includes remapping the way the LED rings behave.  If you have used the APC40 than you may know what I'm talking about.  Keep checking back for a video preview of the new version.
I had to share this post that I found while forum crawling:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

QUESTIONS NOT TO ASK A DJ!:

1. PLAY SOMETHING GOOD...SOMETHING WE CAN DANCE TO!
-The DJ has to play for more than one person...so, what you may hate may be anothers favorite song and EVERYTHING played here can be danced to one way or another.

2. WOULD YOU PLAY SOMETHING WITH A BEAT?
-BE SERIOUS! We know of NO songs played in a club that don't have some sort of a beat!

3. I DON'T KNOW WHO SINGS IT AND I DON'T KNOW THE NAME OF THE SONG, BUT IT GOES LIKE THIS...
-Please don't sing for the DJ! They have to put up with smoke-filled rooms and dangerous decibel levels all night. Do them a favor and DON'T give them a rendition of your favorite song!

4. EVERYBODY WANTS TO HEAR IT!
-Oh sure, you polled EVERYONE in the club and, as their spokesperson, you are requesting the song.

5. I CAN GET LAID IF YOU PLAY IT!
-If you are GOOD ENOUGH, you can get laid to anything! (also been known as "buy the album and get laid for a month!")

6. I WANT TO HEAR IT NEXT!
-The only people who can get away with that statement writes the DJ's paycheck!

7. I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANNA HEAR...WHAT DO YOU HAVE?
-It's a lot easier for you to go have another beer and figure out what you want to hear than it is for the DJ to recite the name of EVERY record in the booth!

8. HEY YO, NOBODY CAN DANCE TO THIS!
-It is not advisable to say this when the dance floor is packed (but, some people do anyway)! However, even if there is only ONE person on the floor, it STILL contradicts the statement.

9. EVERYBODY WILL DANCE TO IT IF YOU PLAY IT!
-The DJ won't...I guess that blows a hole in that theory!

SOME ASSORTED THINGS NOT TO SAY:
If you ask for a song and the DJ says he just played it!
DON'T SAY, "Well, I just got here." It makes absolutely no difference.
DON'T SAY, "Is this the only kind of music you play?" If you go to a Chinese restaurant, you wouldn't ask for Italian food. Rock clubs play rock, alternative clubs play alternative, discos play disco, etc., etc., etc...
If you ask for a song, BE SPECIFIC. DON'T SAY, "I wanna hear something, anything but this!" Try going to the bar and saying, "I wanna drink something, anything but this..." You can't complain if you're not SPECIFIC. HOWEVER, if you ARE specific and the DJ says he doesn't have the song,
DON'T SAY, "What? What do you mean you don't have it? What kind of DJ are you? Why don't you get into the wonderful world of fast food! You obviously don't know what you're doing as a DJ!"

Special Note: Nightclub DJs are expected to play everything for everybody. It is impossible to satisfy all to the people all of the time, yet club jocks are expected to do just that.
If a radio jock tells his listeners a song is a hit, the majority of the people think it must be "because they said so on the radio." However, 80% of the time, that same song was being played in a club long before the radio DISCOVERED the NEW song. So, give the DJ a break!
The next time you request a song, stop and THINK before you speak.
And above all, if the DJ has one hand on the mixer, one hand on a TURNTABLE - wearing headphones, DON'T BUG HIM OR HER!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thanks to DJ Strategy for this!!
